The
European Week for Waste Reduction is a project supported by the ‘Life+’
Programme, which is the European Union’s funding instrument for both the
environment and climate change. This initiative aims to put forward the concept
of waste prevention, reuse and recycling of materials while increasing the
awareness of ways to reduce our waste. In Malta the European Week for Waste
Reduction is managed by Wasteserv Malta Ltd.
As
a public entity, the Department of Contracts has decided to participate in this
event by encouraging its employees to come up with practical proposals and
ideas to help reduce and recycle waste and thus promote the overall teamwork of
all the members of staff.
The
employees immediately took the initiative to collect plastic bottles, cardboard
and old jewellery which other than being disposed of, have been passed on to a
colleague to convert these unwanted waste into a work of art. These discarded
materials have been modified and altered creating a collage portrait of a 'Sleeping Beauty'.
The creation
process of this work of art involved melting down plastic and shaping it into
tiny pieces, the dismantling of old jewellery and finally pasting these items
on cardboard to create the silhouette of the ‘Sleeping Mermaid’.
This impressive work of art made from recycled material certainly conveys the message that unwanted waste can be converted into a treasure which boasts beauty and colour!
