Tuesday - Flora
Part 1 – Making use of recycling papers
and other materials
Since, I love nature and the
environment, I wanted to create something which included the beauty of nature,
mainly flowers. I chose this beautiful
woman, which represents the inner beauty of peace and tranquillity. The picture chosen is taken from a very old
magazine, circa 50 years ago. The name
flora was chosen, from the Roman mythology Flora who was a Sabine-derived
goddess of flowers and representing the season of spring – a symbol of nature
and flowers, especially the may-flower.
I started the project by first
creating a rectangular cardboard made from cardboard boxes and other recycled
paper material, in order to place the art on it. As a spatula, I used a small piece of
cardboard itself in order to be able to spread the glue evenly and placed a
used paper on them, to trim the edges.
Since this needs to be hanged on
a wall I prepared the hole in order to put a string. As a string I used a shoe-lace in order to
make use of all wasted material. I made
use of pegs so that the card boards would stay in place and also heavy jugs as
weights so that the glue does not inflate but stay flat and let the
cardboard dry.
To create the painting, I used
carbon paper, which in Maltese we call ‘karta saħħara’ and I traced the woman
from the magazine in order to be able to place it on the material. I did some changes to the drawing of the
woman in order to create an effect according to my liking. I turned her straight hair into curly and
bouncy hair for a better effect with the plastic and added more to her body
showing a side of her hip and her leg.
For the painting of the face and
the body, I had to make use of acrylic paints using a mixture of yellow
and white, and a small amount of red and brown mixed together to obtain the skin
colour. I used yellow, darker browns and
red for the hair.
