SIGNING OF THE SECOND INTERCONNECTOR BETWEEN MALTA AND SICILY

On 28/06/2024, a public call was issued by the Department of Contracts for the manufacture and installation of the submarine 245kV cable with embedded FO cable and accessories for the 2nd MT-IT electrical interconnector in an environmentally friendly.  The estimated value of this project was €185,000,000 and it is to be co-funded by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund Programme 2021-2027.

After just over four (4) months under tender submission, four (4) offers were received by the closing date.  These were evaluated by Interconnect Malta, the final beneficiary of the project, and Nexans Norway AS were the recommended bidder.

Yesterday, all the hard work came to fruition with the contract agreement being signed by Mr Adrian Dalli (Director General (Contracts)) and Mr Yvan Duperray (Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Nexans) in the presence of the Dr Miriam Dalli, (Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness), Architect Godwin Agius (Chairperson – Interconnect Malta).

The second, 99km interconnector will complement the first cable that was installed in 2015, by the same company that will be installing the new cable.

This new cable will ensure peace of mind for Malta and its population, ensuring long term stability when it comes to the country’s electricity supply.  It will also support the Malta’s clean energy targets as part of the 2050 vision.
